Heidi Yernberg has practiced in information technology (IT) and data privacy and security for over twenty years. Her practice focuses on offering solutions for corporate clients and small businesses, with a special focus on serving clients in the healthcare industry. Before joining Jayaram Law, Heidi practiced for nearly ten years at a large, international law firm where she led the Health Information Technology Affinity Group. She then founded Heidi Echols Law, where she continued to serve her large corporate clients from a smaller platform and expanded her practice to serve early-stage companies.

Heidi’s practice is transactional and regulatory-based. Clients look to Heidi for advice on ongoing data protection strategies. She assists them in data audits and business line analyses and developing privacy and security policies and procedures. With her niche focus on the healthcare industry, she is experienced in the privacy and security rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and state law privacy and security breach laws. Heidi also advises on other federal and state privacy and security laws such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Heidi routinely drafts and negotiates agreements that comply with the requirements of privacy and state laws and that incorporate best practices for data protection. She also assists clients in their compliance efforts including requirements for de-identification, secondary uses of identifiable data, and data aggregation and analysis.

Heidi represents clients in commercial transactions and data privacy matters in all industries. She has experience drafting and negotiating  contracts such as purchase and sale agreements, intellectual property licenses, professional service agreements, outsourcing agreements and consulting agreements.  Heidi also negotiates and drafts arrangements to protect trade secrets and other confidential information.
Heidi has been a frequent speaker and writer on legal issues and an active participant in American Health Lawyers Association, having previously served as Co-Chair of the Electronic Health Records Affinity Group and the Tech Licensing and Intellectual Property Affinity Group.

Heidi is currently chair of the Board of Trustees of Morgan Park Academy, ranked second in diversity among private high schools in the state of Illinois. She also served as a mentor to high school youth for twelve years at LINK Unlimited, a mentoring and scholarship organization dedicated to elevating the future of African American youth. When not practicing law, Heidi enjoys attending theatre productions, playing piano, and attending her three children’s music and sporting events.
