Enforcing Judgments Across State Lines

If your company has obtained a judgment for unpaid business debts and the debtor moves to
another state, you are entitled to enforce that judgment based on the Uniform Enforcement of
Foreign Judgments Act.

This act enables creditors to enforce a judgment in cases where a debtor’s assets may reside in
another state, or if the debtor moves to another state. In general, judgments can be enforced
across state lines by:

1. Filing a new law suit based on the original judgment; or

2. Filing an exemplified copy of the foreign judgment with the appropriate office of the court in
states that have adopted the Uniform Enforcement of Foreign Judgments Act, and notifying the
debtor. These include all states EXCEPT California, District of Columbia, Indiana, Massachusetts,
Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, South Carolina and Vermont.
