Summertime.
It captures the mood right now — and it’s also a nod to the late, great Brian Wilson, the American pop visionary whose lush, layered songs reshaped music history. From Pet Sounds to Good Vibrations, his influence echoes through everyone who followed: Michael Jackson, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Frank Ocean, the list goes on.
He also had the ability to do something that we try to do here at Jayaram, while lawyering: he worked with complex chord structures, melodies, and arrangements, but he delivered the compositions to the audience in a very accessible, very understandable way. Every good lawyer I have ever met is able to do the same thing. Material Adverse Event, likelihood\ of confusion, genuine issues of material fact. These are all legal standards that probably sound like gobbledygook to most people. But good lawyers—and I’d like to think we’ve got a bunch of them!—are able to turn complexity into clarity. At the end of the day, that’s a big part of our job, whether it’s making things clear for a client, a judge, or even an adversary.
So what’s on our mind this summer as we publish The Innovator 016?
For us, IP, AI, products. These 3 items have occupied our brains and practices for the balance of the year. And throughout issue 016, this is evident.
You’re going to meet Gabriela Noelle, an energetic and dynamic Cuban‑American artist and designer based in Miami, known for creating immersive, playful sculptures— like swings, toadstools, and interactive “imaginary friend” figures. She has been featured in exhibitions and collaborations globally, including shows at Perrotin and the Louis Vuitton Foundation Library, as well as custom collections with brands like Mira Mikati and Larroudé.
You’re also going to get to hear about all the things our friend Karl Cyprien has been up to, as he gives us a look into his daily schedule balancing travel, family and his many projects as vice president of Daniel Arsham Studio.
There’s so much in this issue, but two other things I’ll quickly mention.
Our CEO Noah Ornstein (who just celebrated 3+ years at Jayaram!) is going to give you his view on #legaltech, and why we’re building the products we’re building. By the time you read The Innovator 017 this winter, one of our two products, TAKE CARE, will have launched. Read up!
And I had to write about the ongoing saga at the intersection of AI and IP law, where dozens of plaintiffs are suing Meta, Anthropic, and anyone else training large language models on IP. With two June rulings making waves, I figured it was time for an update. TLDR: it’s early, but it seems like big tech has a lawful path to training models using existing IP.
Jayaram is jamming!
16 years old now, we are maturing into the teenagers we are, but not too fast: we know this is also a time to be adventurous and figure out how we can use technology to deliver faster, better, and more affordable advice to our clients around the world.
It’s going to be a busy fall in our New York and Miami studios, and I’ll be making trips to Chicago, LA, and SF. I’d love to see all of you.
