A Word from Vivek

Jayaram turns 15 this year! Thank you, thank you, thank you to everybody who supported us on this extraordinary journey. But rest assured—we’re just getting started!

So, what am I most excited about heading into 2024? There’s so much to talk about (I feel like there always is, and for those of you that know me, that’s probably not a surprise!), but I think this year is all about connecting and engaging in person with our community in ways we’ve never been able to do before.

Now that we’ve opened two relatively new spaces (W 21st Street in NYC, Design District in Miami), we are ready for a year of programming and engaging with all of you as often and as meaningfully as possible.

Here’s a rundown of what we have going on:

02 07
University of Miami EASL Social Circuit, MIA

My wife Carolina and I have been co-chairs of the University of Miami School of Law’s Entertainment, Arts, and Sports Law Program for this past year. This past week, we hosted students, the Law School board, and some faculty + administration at our future forward space in Miami. It was a great time to mix with impressive and experienced lawyers who sit on the board, and a perfect time to celebrate the students who have helped make this program one of the most respected of its kind in the world!

02 12
The Innovator 013 Release Event, NYC

NYFW is here, and we want to take part in some of the fun! On Feb 12, we will be launching The Innovator 013, an action packed issue focused to a large degree on our representation of clients in the fashion space. For the event itself, Jayaram is hosting dozens of General Counsel from NY-based fashion brands, as well as many other creatives and fashion world types who will be in town for the industry gathering in NYC. We will be handing out hot off the press 013s, and yours truly will be in discussion with one of our special clients, where we plan on discussing the issues of the day in the fashion industry in 2024.

This is part of a new plan here at Jayaram, where we will no longer be publishing The Innovator on a strict quarterly schedule. Instead, we’ll be selecting four times a year for our releases (Fashion Week, Office Launch, Holiday Party, etc)! Hope you enjoy the new cadence!

02 15
Making Miami Tech Dinner, MIA

Our Making Miami moniker wasn’t ever going to stop with one event! We truly want to make Miami a better place to work, live, and create. And so we’ll be having a series where we gather influential and interesting Miamians to engage on various topics and communities that are important in the Magic City.

As everybody knows (and as the firm has widely experienced), the influx of technology entrepreneurs and adjacent ecosystems that have relocated to the 305 since 2020 has been staggering. For this dinner, we have invited about 50 or so founders to the space to have a lively discussion on the importance of protecting IP as an early stage company. We’ll use the evening as a way to bring this founder community together to discuss common obstacles and challenges this community encounters in Miami, along with possible avenues for resolution.

Cle 002 AI + Copyright Law, MIA

Navigating the thorny IP and corporate legal issues related to generative AI has consumed a lot of our practice over the past year. And the copyright conundrum that we’re all witnessing through the filing of over a dozen lawsuits against OpenAI has reached a fever pitch. This CLE will spend some time reinforcing the basics of what we’ve seen over the past year in the Copyright Office and now in the Federal Courts, and builds upon the several CLE we have already done for public companies and others on artificial intelligence.

We’ll also take some time to make some predictions about where things may land in the future. This will be an exciting one!

03 14
CLE 001: Sneaker Law, NYC

Everybody here knows that my Jayaram teammate Kenneth Anand and his partner Jared Goldstein (our client with Live Intent) authored a very successful book called Sneaker Law. They’ve taught this course all over the country, and in March, will be delivering a CLE on selected topics from the book to a group of GCs and other business affairs people in NY who work for brands that sell or produce footwear. This is a must attend for any GC or other lawyer working with a fashion or apparel brand that is or has a desire to make waves in footwear.

I just have to say — I can’t believe how much Kenneth knows about the sneaker business!

IP IP IP IP IP IP IP, NYC

Coinciding with Fordham Law School’s 31st Annual IP Conference, Jayaram will be hosting a night of IP at the NY space, where we will discuss a hot button IP issue (Fair Use/AI seem likely) and have a panel featuring Jayaram team members and people who are in town for the Fordham conference.

04 08
Video Killed The Radio Star, MIA

Between ArtRepublic, Artbox, Andres Reisinger, SixNFive, ArtxCode, Emily Xie, and many others, we’ve definitely cultivated a very interesting roster of creatives working in digital art, a medium that has been particularly embraced by the Miami community.

So this April, @Katerina Llanes will be curating a digital art exhibition and evening in April for our clients, friends, and community, featuring work from clients.

05 02
CLE 003 Artists + Designers Unite, NYC

Frieze, one of the most important art fair outside of Art Basel in the United States, takes place the first week of May in NYC.

Danny and Michelle have decided to use the influx of creatives in town + country that week to give a one-hour CLE to artists + designers, in which our two teammates will explain to creatives the basics of what they need in their legal toolkit as their careers start to grow and the commissions and deals start to roll in.

Why does an artist need a lawyer?
What is IP?
What constitutes a contract?

These types of CLEs are extraordinarily important for anyone starting a new business, or anyone creating work or content in the US!

Many thanks to Michelle + Danny for stepping up here!

05 02
Office Launch, NYC

On May 2, soon after our team retreat to Miami, we’ll be celebrating the re-opening of our NY office, and will be inviting so many of our clients and friends to join us in an evening of celebration!

There you have it! The first few months of 2024, mapped out for your convenience. As for this issue, you’re in for a treat!

We have interviews with a variety of people in the fashion industry, several articles about IP and other legal concerns, liner notes, hours, and much, much more.

Throw on your favorite record, get comfortable, and enjoy!
